Participants served in six groups, each of which was charged with one of the following concerns: personnel development, financial advancement, academic development, facilities planning and management, growth and marketing, and student resources.

Each group considered various possible strategic initiatives related to its assigned area and gleaned from seven different sources, including the school's Environmental Scanning Group and the recent online Strategic Planning Survey. Summit groups reported five or six initiatives which they ranked as most important.

Now the Strategic Planning Committee will process information from the summit to determine which items should be included immediately in the GBS's new "Strategic Plan" and which may be placed later in the plan.

"The committee is grateful for the broad participation in planning, including this summit," according to Dr. Kenneth Farmer, Vice-President for Academic Affairs. I almost said that it was characterized by God's presence in every service, but it was so much more than that. God came to us on the bus as we rode down the highway. He came to us in our times of prayer before the service. He was welcomed every moment."

These words of Sonja Vernon, GBS dean of women, express the excitement that marked the school's two musical tours this semester. The first was by the college choir, February 21-March 2, and included sacred concerts before 14 congregations located in Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, West Virginia, Indiana, and Ohio. Following this was the SWSE tour, March 28-April 1, which made presentations in Ohio, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. Both tours were coordinated by Don Davison, head of GBS's Office of Public Relations.

Directing both choir and orchestra was Professor Garen Wolf, chair of the GBS Division of Music. The tours provided opportunities for fund-raising, student-recruitment, and distribution of such materials as CD's, books, and copies of God's Revivalist. Phillip Brown II, faculty member of GBS's Division of Ministerial Education. In the fall of 2004, Zondervan responded to Dr. Brown's book proposal and offered him a contract. A Reader's Hebrew Bible is designed to help those with at least one year of formal training in Biblical Hebrew to develop their skills by reading the Old Testament in its original language. This volume contains the entire Hebrew (and Aramaic) Old Testament from Genesis to Malachi. All Hebrew words that occur less than 100 times have been footnoted at the bottom of each page where they occur. A contextual definition derived from two major Hebrew lexicons (HALOT and BDB) is provided. Of the 60,500-plus words that occur less than 100 times, Dr. Brown handled 48,000 of them. He asked his former teaching partner and PhD classmate, Dr. Bryan Smith, to help him notate the remaining 12,000 words. Dr. Smith, who earned an Old Testament PhD, is the Bible integration coordinator for Bob Jones University Press.

Because Zondervan does not have the personnel trained to typeset Hebrew, Dr. Brown typeset the entire volume and submitted a press ready-version to the publisher. Typesetting the volume involved writing a program in Visual Basic for Applications that set up the text properly in MS Word and then transferred it programmatically to Adobe PageMaker. As Dr. Phil notes in his preface, his ability to produce and typeset this volume is a marvelous example of God's providential working to prepare His servants to accomplish the tasks He has for them. It is his hope that this tool will help pastors, teachers, seminarians and educated laypersons to understand and appreciate God's Word in the Old Testament more deeply. We praise the Lord for this achievement by one of our faculty members and offer our congratulations to Dr. Phil for this honor!

Amazon.com: A Readaer's Hebrew Bible

New music release on CD: Harmony of Hymns

In Christian worship, two books are vital in our efforts to give God praise. Obviously, God's Word is central to all of our worship. The Bible reveals God and His will for us.

But another book has been the source of inspiration to God's people as they assemble together. That book is the Christian Hymnal. In it are songs of praise, melodies of love, and words of comfort and encouragement.

This recording is a collection of some of the best-loved hymns and gospel songs. Each one reminds us of Jesus Christ and His infinite love for us. You may find yourself singing along with a heart of worship and praise.

I trust this Harmony of Hymns will assure you of God's care, remind you of His faithfulness, and give you expression of your love for Him.

Jack Hooker
Vice President for Advancement

[ order Harmony of Hymns ]

Job Opportunities at GBS

Thanks for your interest
GBS is processing the applications for several of the positions recently advertised in this section.
